Celebrate Bathroom Safety Month!
Sunday, January 31, 2016 - 2:47pm
As the winter weather wears on, most of us are thinking about how to stay warm and safe. Driving to work can be a little more hazardous during this time of year with the road conditions, and getting to the end destination safely is top of mind.
But, outside of the home is not the only place that you have to be thoughtful of safety. In fact, most accidents that people get into actually happen inside of their home. And, there is not a room in your home that is more hazardous than the bathroom.
We are all aware of how we can get hurt in the kitchen, and we take the proper steps to avoid the burns and the cuts. But, most people don’t think about getting hurt in the bathroom, and that is what makes it dangerous.
January is National Bath Safety Month. This day is meant to bring awareness to just how dangerous your bathroom can be if you are not prepared.
Here are some tips that you can follow to make your bathroom safer for all members of your family:
- Place a non-slip bath mat on the floor outside of the bathtub or shower. Make sure that you have more than one on hand so that there is always something there if one is in the wash. A mat or rug on the floor provides a safe place to step when exiting the bath or shower, and eliminates the chances of water getting puddled on the floor from wet feet.
- Make sure that all cabinets, drawers, and toilets are child-proofed if you have children in the home. Bathrooms are notorious for housing cleaning products and various chemicals, so making sure to keep these items out of the reach of children is essential to safety.
- Add non-slip decals to the floor of your shower or bathtub. We all take showers and baths without thinking much about where we are stepping and, this can easily cause a slip and fall accident. Adding non-slip decals improves the grip on the floor of the shower and reduces the chance of a slip and fall accident.
The winter months can be hazardous enough with the cold and icy weather, having an accident inside your home would make a very bad day. Keep safety top of mind this month and implement these tips in your bathroom.
