Tips For Saving Water When You Have Holiday Guests

If you are entertaining house guests this month and hosting Thanksgiving dinner, you probably have a to-do list that is out the door.
Not only do you have to make sure that the house is clean and the guest bathrooms are in top shape but, you have to get the pantry and refrigerator stocked with all of the favorite snacks and drinks.
For many people this is the busiest time of year for their home, and especially for their plumbing system. In fact, the water bill that comes from all of this extra activity can be a little shocking.
If you are preparing your home for extra guests and cooking, make sure to implement some of these water-saving tips to conserve your utility bill this month:
- Low-flow plumbing fixtures are a no-brainer. But, if you haven’t taken the plunge and installed low-flow to all of the bathrooms in your home – now is a good time to do that. During the rest of the year, your guest bathrooms might not get used enough to need low-flow fixtures. But, if you are having people over, your guest bathrooms will be a sieve for extra water use and low-flow fixtures are a great way to reign that in. Low-flow fixtures have been on the market for many years, and you are sure to find a style and price that fits your needs.
- A blanket for the water heater could be helpful. In most homes, the water heater is installed in a room that is not insulated and is therefore vulnerable to the outside temperatures. This means that the cold weather will work against the heating element of the system and cause it to work harder. By wrapping your water heater in a blanket (one that is insulated and made for protecting your water heater) you help to keep the water inside of tank warm.
- With more people in the home, you will likely be doing more laundry – especially towels. To conserve water, make sure you are doing a full load of laundry and that the water level matches the amount of laundry you are doing. While using more water might seem like it rinses better, if you use the recommended amount of soap for the types of laundry you are washing, you won’t have to worry about the extra rinsing.
Make sure that having family and house-guests over leaves behind only good memories and good fun – not a hefty water bill. Follow these tips for keeping your water usage on par while you have the extra people and activity in your home this month.
