2014: The Year of the Toilet

Mr. Rooter Shares the Top Five Plumbing News Stories of 2014

WACO, Texas (December 31, 2014) – 2014 has been a year of plumbing highs and lows. To commemorate the unparalleled year that the plumbing industry experienced, Mr. Rooter Plumbing has compiled the top five plumbing news stories of the year. From the toilets at Sochi to former Mayor Bloomberg’s pro-plumber sentiment, it’s safe to say the year was “flush” with interesting toilet talk.

1. Polar Vortex: The start of 2014 brought with it frigid winter weather. Freezing temperatures hit areas unprepared for the effects of the blustery weather causing plumbing mayhem around most of the United States. From frozen pipes to flooding homes, the winter of early 2014 was a wake-up for homeowners and plumbers alike.

2. Toilets of Sochi: The winter Olympics kicked off in Sochi, Russia and immediately Olympic visitors took to social media to share the odd (and often puzzling) toilet situations in and around Sochi. From double toilets in single stalls to missing mechanics on unusable loos, the toilets of Sochi became a viral sensation.

3. Bloomberg’s advice for graduates: “Being a plumber… would be a better deal,” stated former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg on his weekly radio show. In support of Bloomberg’s statement, the Labor Bureau reports that the industry is projected to grow by 22% (as compared to 11% in all other industries.) The potential to make a good living with a trade career continues to flourish in 2014 and beyond.

4. Things your plumber wishes you wouldn’t do: Today.com featured a fantastic article outlining some uncommon plumbing knowledge for the common homeowner. In an attempt to help educate the average consumer, Mr. Rooter Plumbing shared insider information on keeping a home’s plumbing in top shape.

5. Texas Plumber’s truck ends up in jihadist hands: The unfortunate circumstances that led to a Texas plumber’s former truck being used as an anti-aircraft gun carrier may never be known. The plumber sold his work truck in 2011 – without removing his business logo and phone number from the door – and learned in December that an Islamic militant group was using his former truck after they posted a photo of it on Twitter.
