Some plumbing problems are obvious — your toilet won’t flush or your shower won’t get hot. Leaks, however, aren’t always one of the obvious problems.
When we talk about signs of a leak, most people assume pools of water or dripping ceilings are the only things they should be on the lookout for, but that’s not always the case. It’s easy to forget that water can cause serious damage to your home, including mold and mildew damage. If you suspect you have a leak, it’s important to fix it as soon as possible.
Signs You Have a Leak
If you notice any of the following, you may have a leak in your home:
- A sudden spike in your water bill. Water usage has been known to increase in the spring and summer, but if your water usage jumps out of nowhere, it may be because water is being wasted through a leak.
- Cracks in your foundation. If your home is several years old and you’re just now starting to notice cracks, water may be to blame. If water is continually leaking from your basement or main level, it can weaken your home’s foundation and lead to cracks in the walls and floor.
- You’re finding mold growth. Mold grows in damp, wet areas so if you find mold in unusual spots, like in cabinets or bedrooms, you may have a leak nearby.
- Musty odors. Sometimes you can smell a leak before you see it. When water sits in one place for too long, like under a pipe behind your wall, it’ll begin to emit a smell.
