How to Install a New Dishwasher

With summer cookouts and outdoor parties in full swing, the dishes in your kitchen are likely piling up — why stand for hours at the kitchen sink when modern dishwasher models take the time and hassle from washing dishes?

Whether you’re replacing a broken appliance or need a more effective, energy-efficient model, a new dishwasher can be incredibly beneficial for your household. While a new dishwasher installation may seem like an extensive and complicated plumbing project, by understanding the proper installation tools and techniques, you can easily enjoy more free time and cleaner dishes in less than a day.

Dishwashers may seem like intricate appliances, but they only use three basic connections: the water supply, drain line and electrical hookup. To install your new dishwasher, you only need to disconnect these attachments from your existing dishwasher and reattach them to your new one. If you’re uncomfortable or inexperienced with performing plumbing tasks around your home, call a professional plumbing company to complete the installation process efficiently and effectively.

Installing a Dishwasher

With your new dishwasher out of its box and your toolbox nearby, you’re probably excited to begin the installation process. To remove your existing dishwasher and install the new one, begin by shutting off the power and water to the area. Finish removing your old dishwasher by unscrewing the attachments screws, locating the junction box and disconnecting the wiring, removing the water supply and drain line and sliding the unit from under the counter.

Once the old appliance has been removed, position your new dishwasher with its front facing up towards the ceiling the follow these steps:

  • Attach drain line: Use pliers or a clamp to attach the hose to the drain line at the dishwasher, then slide the hose through the hole leading to your kitchen sink.
  • Place dishwasher beneath the countertop: Slide the new dishwasher beneath the countertop and make sure it's level by adjusting the height of the dishwasher’s legs with a wrench. Then, secure the dishwasher to the counter with screws.
  • Connect water supply and dishwasher 90: Locate the water line and attach it to the dishwasher 90 — while new dishwashers are complete with all of their necessary installation accessories, most do not include a dishwasher 90, so you likely will have to purchase this piece at your local hardware store.
  • Attach wiring: Find the junction box on your new dishwasher, then uncap the wires and slide them through the sleeve, tightening them securely in place and reattaching the box.
  • Secure supply line under sink: The drain hose is already connected to the dishwasher, and now it needs to be attached to the hose beneath your sink. Use a clamp to connect the drain hose.

Now that your new dishwasher is properly installed, turn on your water and power supply and test the operations of your dishwasher.

How to Install a New Dishwasher When There Wasn’t One Before

In many older kitchens, there may not be an existing place for dishwasher installation. If you are hoping to install a new dishwasher in your kitchen, make sure it’s located as close to your sink as possible. Since a dishwasher installation requires a water supply and drain line, it’s best to call an experienced, licensed plumber to set up these connections and ensure everything was done properly.
