Is your dishwasher leaking? Often dishwashers leak through the door. The most common mistake homeowners make when they discover the dishwasher is leaking is that it is coming from the door and that it’s got to be the door gasket, (a rubber seal that runs around the opening of the door).
A leaking dishwasher can be caused by excessive soapsuds and is the most common reason dishwashers leak. Too much soap will cause dishwashers to leak from the door. If the leak is coming through the door and you determined it isn’t caused soap, it can be leaking through the soap cup or rinse aid dispenser.
What else can cause a dishwasher to leak? For example, a broken float switch, (responsible for regulating water volume); will permit water to fill the tub until it overflows. Damaged spray arms can also cause leaks. Leaks where the drain hose connects to your sink drain or garbage disposal can often be a source of a leak.
A small amount of standing water in the bottom of your dishwasher is normal, but when the amount of water is above the drain and leaks onto the floor when you open the door, the dishwasher drain hose may be clogged. Since the water drains from the dishwasher, through your disposal and your main sink drain line, it makes sense to check these areas before dismantling your dishwasher to check the drain line for clogs.
Clogged Dishwasher Drain Hose
Dishwasher drain clogs typically appear most often in a hose or at the outlet from the pump or drain housing where a check valve, (controls the flow of water), may be located. If any of the hoses develop a kink they should be replaced.
The valve is normally a rubber flapper that is located on the outlet port of the drain pump or housing. It keeps dirty water from returning into the unit. If you suspect that the drain hose has a restriction or if you find that waste water is getting back into the dishwasher tub, then the check valve is most likely the problem.
