Help Your Home Save Water This Year

Water-conservation is an important part of running a household. We all think about it at some point throughout the year, but setting a real intention could make a big impact.
Not only does using too much water impact the environment but, it also impacts your monthly utility bill. With the end of the year upon us, this is a good time to make your list of New Year’s resolutions and add water-conservation to it.
There are many ways that you and your family can save water around the house. Just changing a couple of little habits will have a big impact. Here are a couple of tips for saving water throughout 2016 and beyond:
- Shop around at the end of the year sales for new and more efficient plumbing appliances. Washing machines are a popular item to be on sale this time of year, and the newer models are built specifically with water-conservation in mind. It used to be that there were only a few settings to choose from when it came to water consumption. But, now you can purchase a washing machine that senses how much laundry is in the load, and fills the tub accordingly.
- If you don’t have a dishwasher in your home, now is a good time to get one. Washing dishes by hand is a tremendous waste of water because the faucet is running during the entire process. In fact, you could actually run out of hot water while washing a load of dishes by hand. With a dishwasher, the mechanics of the machine are designed to only use the amount of water that is absolutely necessary for the task.
- Make sure that all members of your family know to turn the water off when they are brushing their teeth. This is especially true for families with young children. You can also shop around for low-flow faucets or shut off valves that can be installed on your bathroom faucets to help with reducing the amount of water that is used during tooth brushing.
Keep your home water-efficient by setting a resolution for improving water-consumption in the New Year. While it might not seem like an immediate need during the winter months, once the summer hits you will be happy that you conserved now.
