Using your plumbing system on a daily basis means taking maintenance steps regularly as well. There are some things that you can do while you are using your plumbing system like, run the hot water when you use the garbage disposal.
But, other plumbing maintenance tips need to be scheduled and done consistently. Maintenance is your best course of action for avoiding major plumbing malfunctions or failures. It’s the same as with your car or truck; you drive it on a daily basis and every 3,000 miles you have the oil changed. This is maintenance. Something that you do to keep your system working properly … every time that you need it.
Here are just a few things to check about your plumbing system on a monthly basis:
- Each month, remove the showerheads from all of your showers and check the gaskets and plumbing tape for signs of wear and cracking. The gasket inside especially, because it is rubber and over time it will dry out, crack, and start to crumble. This is truer in bathrooms that only get used occasionally (i.e., guest bathroom). Also, while you have the showerhead removed, soak it in a bowl of vinegar to break down any of the build-up or corrosion. This can happen especially if you have hard water in your home.
- Check around the base of the toilet, sink faucets, and under cabinets for leaks on a regular basis. A small leak can quickly escalate into a major leak and, it is always better to find the small leak and repair it. Don’t wait until water is pouring out from under your kitchen sink to discover that the garbage disposal has a crack in it. Check all of these areas on a regular basis and get the repairs done while the problem is still small.
- Make sure that everyone in your household knows where the shut-off valves are for the various appliances in your home. Even middle school kids can be helpful in the case of water flooding all over the bathroom floor. Teaching them where the toilet shut off valve is could be a huge benefit.
Valentine’s Day is the holiday on everyone’s mind this month. Whether you celebrate in an all-out kind of way or, you’re more subtle with something small – this is one holiday that could be completely ruined by a plumbing disaster.
