Spring Plumbing Checklist

Essential Tips to Prepare Your Home for the Season

After months of harsh winter weather, homeowners in South Jersey are gearing up for the fresh bloom, warmer temperatures, and longer days. However, before you fully relax into the season, it’s important to make sure your home’s plumbing is ready to handle this transitional period.

Winter’s freeze can take its toll on pipes, drains, and other systems, which is why a thorough plumbing inspection is key to starting each new season off right. By following a curated checklist, you can prevent potential issues, reduce your water bills, and enjoy a safer, more efficient home this spring.

Inspect for Leaks

Winter’s freezing temperatures can cause pipes to expand, contract, and sometimes crack. These tiny cracks may not be immediately noticeable but can turn into major leaks if ignored. Take a few moments to inspect under your sinks, in your basement, or along exposed pipes for any signs of dripping.

Also keep an eye out for water stains on walls or ceilings, as these could indicate a hidden leak. If you notice any leaks—even a small one—it’s important to address them sooner rather than later. Small leaks can lead to wasted water, higher utility bills, and even structural damage.

Test Your Sump Pump

South Jersey homes are no strangers to heavy spring rains, and your sump pump plays an essential role in preventing basement flooding. A malfunctioning sump pump can quickly lead to a flooded basement, causing damage to flooring, walls, and personal belongings. Check to make sure it’s in working order by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit. The pump should kick in, drain the water, and then shut off properly. If you notice any strange noises, delayed activation, or failure to pump out water, it’s time for a professional inspection.

Clear Out Your Gutters and Downspouts

While gutters aren’t part of your plumbing system, they play a crucial role in keeping water away from your home’s foundation. Leaves, twigs, and other debris can clog gutters and downspouts, causing water to overflow. This can lead to pooling near the foundation, increasing the risk of basement leaks and water damage.

Take the time to clean out your gutters and make sure downspouts are directing water at least five feet away from the house. If you notice any water pooling, you may need to adjust the slope of your yard or extend your downspouts for better drainage.

Check Your Water Heater

After working overtime in the winter to provide warm showers and heat, your water heater may need a little attention this spring. Flushing the tank to remove sediment buildup is a great way to maintain efficiency and prolong the life of your water heater. Additionally, check the temperature settings to make sure they’re set no higher than 120°F to prevent scalding and save on energy costs. If your water heater is making unusual sounds, leaking, or failing to deliver consistent hot water, it may need repair or replacement.

Examine Outdoor Faucets and Sprinkler Systems

Spring is the perfect time to bring your outdoor faucets, hoses, and sprinkler systems back to life—but not before inspecting for damage caused by freezing temperatures. Turn on outdoor faucets and watch for leaks or reduced water flow, which could indicate a cracked pipe.

Similarly, check your sprinkler system to make sure all heads are functioning properly. Leaks in outdoor plumbing can often go unnoticed, which can contribute to high water bills and potential water damage.

Pay Attention to Your Drains

Slow drains or foul odors are clear signs that your pipes may be clogged. Spring is an excellent time to conduct a drain cleaning to prevent buildups that could lead to major clogs later in the year. Avoid chemical drain cleaners, as they can corrode pipes over time. Instead, call a professional plumber for a safe and effective solution.

Inspect Your Toilets and Faucets

Small drips from faucets or a toilet that runs continuously may not seem like urgent issues, but they can add up to significant water waste. Check all your faucets and showerheads for leaks and inspect your toilet to make sure it’s flushing properly. Even minor plumbing repairs can save hundreds of gallons of water each month.
