Winterize your Home's Plumbing System

Preparing your Home's Plumbing for the New Year

It’s the start of a new decade, and while everyone’s busy trying to maintain their 2020 resolutions, how about starting a resolution focused on long-term home maintenance? Mr. Rooter Plumbing wants to give you some time – and peace of mind – with a few helpful tips to prepare your home for the new year.

Winterize Exterior Faucets

Next week’s weather forecast shows freezing temperatures accompanied with snow! Before the winter blast hits, it’s important to get your home prepared to prevent freezing pipes and plumbing repairs! If you’re a homeowner who hasn’t already covered their exterior faucets, now is the time to do so. First, locate the shut off valve to each exterior hose bibb and turn it off to stop the water from flowing. Once it’s turned off, open up the hose bibb to allow any residual water to drain out. This will prevent any water left in the pipe from freezing. Finally, place a cover over every exterior hose bibb. If you’re unable to locate the shut off valve or don’t have one, placing covers over the exterior hose bibbs will do the job.

Service the Water Heater

Nobody wants to deal with the inconvenience of having no hot water during the winter. Check for these signs to tell whether or not your water heater may need to be serviced:

  • Insufficient water temperature.
  • Shorter length of time with hot water.
  • Leaking water directly from or near the water heater.
  • Irregular noises coming from the tank.
  • Discoloration of water.

If you’re dealing with one of these problems, Mr. Rooter can provide emergency water heater services.

Drain Maintenance

Now that the holidays are over, it’s a great time to take care of any slow drains that may be clogged. Whether it’s a Whole House Hydro Scrub or a bottle of our eco-friendly drain maintenance solution, BioChoiceES®, our service professionals will be able to point you in the right direction – providing the best solution and value that will fit within your budget.

Sewer Inspection

Most homeowners decide to have a sewer inspection done when they are in the process of buying or selling a home. However, if you’ve lived in your house for a long time, call Mr. Rooter for a complete sewer line inspection. Proper preventative maintenance plays an important role in preserving the value of your home.
