This past weekend, Concord, New Hampshire held its 5th annual Black Ice Pond Hockey Tournament. Teams from all over New England, and some even further descended on Concord with their hockey bags and sticks, all hoping to take home the first place trophy.
The Black Ice Pond Hockey Tournament has been a tradition in Concord that started back in 1883, where the first organized hockey competition in the United States took place. This started off a tradition that would be reignited in 2011 when the Black Ice Pond Hockey Tournament was brought back to life at White Park. This event was brought back as a way to give the community a fun event, as well as raise money to give back to the community, which is one of the reasons Mr. Rooter is so proud to take part in the event this year! Over half of the money raised in each of the last 4 years has gone to build a new skate house, as well as helping fund the Concord Youth Hockey Organization. The support that the community shows for the tournament is reciprocated by what they give back to the community, which is what makes the event so great!
In this highly competitive tournament, many teams apply, but only a certain number are accepted each year, and this year, Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Greater New Hampshire was able to sponsor one of the teams taking part in the tournament. We were able to create, purchase, and outfit the team in our own custom Mr. Rooter hockey jerseys, and gave the guys on the ice a fresh new look that caught everyone’s eye.
The Mr. Rooter team played hard and won three of the four games they played in the round robin part of the tournament, leading them on to the semi-finals! In the semi-finals, the Mr. Rooter team was matched up against a daunting opponent, a team that had won the tournament the two previous years. The Mr. Rooter team played as hard as they could, but ended up losing 8-7 in a hard fought match. They represented our company well, and we are proud of the guys who took part in the event!
