If you experience chronic clogs or rely too much on chemical drain cleaners to clear your drains, you may require professional intervention to remove the obstruction. Chemical cleaners can slowly erode your home’s plumbing leading to leaks and water damage. However, not every clogged drain requires professional clearing. In fact, most homeowners have probably experienced a clogged drain in their homes before. If you feel comfortable, we recommend attempting this at-home method for clearing clogs in your home’s sink. The process includes the following steps:
- Fill Sink – Fill the sink partially with warm water. If you have a double sink plug the second drain with a wet rag. For some bathroom sinks, you’ll need to cover the overflow hole.
- Plunge – Use a cup plunger and begin plunging the drain. This will force the water through the obstruction and clear it out.
- Repeat – After you’ve worked the plunger, check to see if the water begins draining normally. If not, repeat the process a few more times.
