Steps to Take If You Have Low Water Pressure

While it’s not uncommon, it’s no fun if you go to take a shower and the water pressure is too low. Similarly, you may also go to water your lawn, but the water pressure is too low to effectively reach the entire yard. These are common situations, but there are specific steps you can take to determine what’s going on, if the problem is isolated, and what you can do to fix it. If you recognize low water pressure, here are some steps to take.

Check to See if More Than One Area Is Affected

In many situations, the home as a whole will suffer from low water pressure. To be sure of this, you want to go around the home and try turning on other faucets or showers in the home. If the low water pressure exists there, it may be a whole house problem. If none of the other areas have low water pressure, check the fixtures of the area(s) where low water pressure does exist.

Check for a Water Leak

Check areas of the home to determine if there is a water leak. A water leak allows some of the water traveling through the pipes to exit, meaning less entering the home. To check for a leak, turn off all of the water in the home and check the meter to see if water is still running. This may be a potential sign of a leak.

Check the Pressure Regulator

Make sure there’s nothing causing the water pressure to be regulated lower than you’d like. This includes the Pressure Reducing Valve. Adjust it and see if it affects the water pressure at all. At times, this valve may fail, requiring you to repair or replace it, in which case you should call a professional to help you.
