4 Tips for Clearing a Clogged Drain

Clogged drains are a common household woe. From hair build-up to food waste and other forms of gunk, clogged drains can cause a lot of headaches for homeowners. If you find yourself with a clogged drain in your kitchen or bathroom, there are a few tried and true household remedies that you can use for simple unclogging.

Use Boiling Water

The drain unclogging process doesn’t get simpler than the boiling water hack. Heat some water in a kettle, on the stove, or in the microwave until boiling. Try to fill the container to the brim – you will need a lot of water to break through the clog! Then, slowly pour the water down the drain in two or three batches. Pause between each pour for a few seconds to help the hot water work its magic.

Try the Volcano Solution

We’re not talking about lava here. The simple science fair trick of baking soda and vinegar can work wonders for your clogged drains. In a container, mix 1/3 cup of baking soda with 1/3 cup of vinegar. Immediately pour the mixture down the drain. Let the mixture sit for at least one hour to overnight, and flush with hot water. The fizzy reaction will remove grease, food waste, hair, and other forms of gunk.

Repurpose Coffee Grounds

After you’ve brewed your morning cup of joe, use your leftover coffee grounds to clear up your clogged drain. This tip is more of a preventive measure than an instant fix. Every so often, pour your used coffee grounds into your drain and let sit. The acid from the grounds helps combat greasy gunk and prevents clog build-up!

The Old-Fashioned Wire Hanger

Wire hangers have served as a go-to clog removal tool for decades. Take your wire hanger and straighten it as much as you can. Next, bend one end of the hanger to create a hook. Insert the hanger hook-side down into the clog and start fishing for gunk. What you remove might be icky, but at least that gunk isn’t in your pipes!
