While the name may sound like this is just as messy as digging a trench, pipe bursting involves two smaller pits: an entry pit, and an exit pit for pulling a pipe-bursting head through. This head, or bullet, expands the existing pipe to fracture it while simultaneously laying the new pipeline behind it. As an environmentally friendly, long-lasting, and fast project, pipe bursting is often the preferred method.

The technical term for slip lining is Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP). This method requires installing an epoxy liner and expanding it with heat, curing it into place to create a pipe within a pipe. However, slip lining is not an option if the sewer pipe runs underneath the building, there are heavy root blockages in the pipe, or part of the pipe is collapsed.
