From buying presents to decorating your house, the holidays are stressful enough. Add a plumbing problem into the mix and you’ve got a major issue on your hands.
While some plumbing issues are caused by bad luck or natural wear and tear, many can actually be prevented. Especially if you’re having guests over for the holidays, make sure your plumbing is being treated well.
Common Holiday Plumbing Problems
Clogged Garbage Disposal
Guests who don’t have a disposal in their home tend to think of one as just an extra garbage. Little do they know, there are dozens of things that should never be thrown into the disposal, like:
- Egg shells
- Small bones
- Pasta
- Stringy vegetables, like celery
Clogged Toilets
The more people who use the toilet, the greater your chances of a clog are. Prevent the likelihood of a problem by always having a plunger and wastebasket next to your toilet.
Backed Up Showers
If your shower goes from being used by one or two people to four or five, it can put unseen stress on your pipes and water heater. Even if you have a tankless heater that offers instant hot water, ask guests to leave at least 20 minutes between showers to ease the burden on your plumbing.
