It’s January, so you are hopefully all decided on what your 2021 resolutions will be (and possibly even dropped a couple). But there’s one more we at Mr. Rooter Plumbing think you should add to the list. Let 2021 be the year you only put things down the drain that belong down the drain. No more unnecessary clogs or damage!
Why Drain’s Aren’t a Cure-All
It’s unfortunate and inconvenient, but you can’t just put whatever you want down the drain. Pipes, while durable, are relatively small, so bulky items can get stuck and cause a clog. Similarly, even if things are not liable to clog, it can corrode and damage you pipes over time.
Things That Should Never Go Down the Drain. Like...Ever.
- Oil/Grease
- Stringy Vegetables
- Coffee Grinds
- Egg Shells
- Hair
- Leftover Food
- Sourdough
- Produce Stickers
Waste Disposal Alternatives
The items described above should always be thrown in the trash. When cooking with oil or grease, let it cool, then dump it into a container that can be closed and placed in the trash. This helps dispose of the used oil without creating a potential spill. If there’s only a tiny amount of oil, wipe the pan with a paper towel before washing it in the sink.
Cooking with a garbage can nearby will help you remember that these waste items belong in there, rather than the sink. You can also create a “waste bowl” to put on the counter while cooking, then dispose of the contents when you’re finished.
