Plumbing Tips for Homeowners this Fall

We may not get several inches of snow at Christmas or freezing temperatures, but winter in San Francisco still requires a bit of prep amongst homeowners. With winter only a few weeks away, now is the time to make sure your home is ready for cooler weather.

Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather

Disconnect your outdoor hose.

If you leave your hose outside all winter long, you risk the water inside of it freezing and expanding. Before temperatures really start to fall, disconnect your water hose, drain it, and store the hose in a dry area, like a garage or shed.

Insulate your pipes.

Pipes that sit behind cabinets, in crawl spaces, and in the garage are at a greater risk of freezing during the winter because they don’t have access to heat circulating throughout the house.

Check on your water heater.

In order to prolong the life of your water heater, you need to schedule regular maintenance. Typically, we suggest having your heater inspected every six months. If you can’t remember when the last time you had yours inspected, it’s time to call Mr. Rooter.

Look for leaks.

A small drip here and there may not seem like much, but small leaks waste thousands of gallons of water every year. And because leaks are often indicative of a larger problem, you should always have a leak repaired the moment you notice it.
