4 Common Plumbing Myths

Sir John Harrington invented the first flushing toilet in 1596, and since that time, the plumbing industry has picked up many myths which have been passed down for generations. While most myths are innocent, some can cause severe damage to your plumbing system. This is why we have created this list to help give you the truth behind some of the most common myths in the industry.

Myths and Misconceptions About Your Plumbing

1. You Can Flush Flushable Wipes

While the package may say that these wipes are flushable, that isn’t exactly true. While wipes can technically flush them, they don’t degrade fast enough, which causes them to get stuck and accumulate in your pipes, leading to clogs. To keep your plumbing healthy and avoid blockages, it’s best only to flush toilet paper.

2. Ice Cubes Can Sharpen Garbage Disposal Blades

This old myth is wrong, but not for the reason you may suspect. Garbage disposals don’t have blades; they’re equipped with unique teeth called impellers, which are too strong to be sharpened by ice cubes.

3. A Noisy Water Heater is Going to Blow Up

That noise coming from your water heater may be troubling, but it’s not as dangerous as you think. The rumbling noise is often caused by the heat created by the water heater trying to force its way through sediment layers. These layers of sediment naturally buildup throughout the years but pose no threat nor require you to replace your unit.

4. Water Flushes in The Opposite Direction in Australia

One of the oldest myths in the plumbing industry! This misconception, which has even been portrayed on The Simpsons, comes from the Coriolis Effect. The myth claims that toilets in the southern hemisphere flush clockwise instead of counterclockwise like in the Northern Hemisphere.

While the Coriolis Effect does cause hurricanes to rotate in opposite directions, it only applies to big bodies of water. The water direction of toilets is determined by their water jets.
