Sunnyvale is further along on this than most cities, and it changes the job. Single-family homes here have a split cart with a food scraps side, collected citywide since the end of 2017, and the city's own guidance answers the obvious question directly: incidental food in the disposal is unavoidable, but the cart makes better use of the material. What's collected goes to the SMaRT Station, is turned into a nutrient-rich mash, and some of it feeds digesters at Sunnyvale's water pollution control plant. The food scraps route here is a cart, and the disposal is the exception.
That matches how the U.S. EPA's Wasted Food Scale ranks it: sending wasted food down the drain is one of the least preferred routes, because it decays quickly in the sewer and the treatment plant then has to deal with it. EPA research published in 2023 also found that over one third of the food produced in the United States is never eaten.
One call we took came from a customer in Mountain View, near San Antonio Center, whose garbage disposal needed repair. The request was about the appliance, and what the job came down to was a blockage, which we cleared. That's worth knowing before you start shopping for a new unit, because a disposal that has stopped working isn't always a disposal that has failed, and the first thing to rule out is whatever is stopping the water.
That's why we look past the appliance. Where a kitchen line has been building grease for years, a camera inspection shows what's on the pipe wall, and HydroScrub® jetting takes it back to bare pipe. A disposal above a line in that state is the part that gets blamed, and rarely the part at fault.
