A sewage ejector pump is not the same as a sump pump, and understanding the difference matters before any installation. A sump pump handles clean groundwater that seeps into a pit. A sewage ejector pump handles black water: waste and wastewater from toilets, sinks, showers, and floor drains that sit below the level of your main sewer line. It collects the waste in a sealed basin, then, depending on the model, grinds or agitates it, and pumps it up and out through a discharge line that connects to your home's main drain or sewer system.
In Yakima and the surrounding Yakima Valley, below-grade plumbing situations come up often. Crawl spaces are common throughout older neighborhoods in Yakima and Union Gap. The basin is typically a 30- to 40-gallon sealed pit set into the floor. Waste flows in by gravity from the connected fixture drains. A float switch activates the pump when the basin reaches a set level, the pump forces the waste up through a 2-inch or 3-inch discharge pipe, and a check valve prevents backflow once the pump shuts off. A vent pipe runs up through the roof to manage odors and equalize pressure. Every component plays a specific role, and every component needs to be sized correctly for the fixture load it will handle.
