Is Your Garbage Disposal Suffering From These Common Problems?

Monday, February 15, 2016 - 4:07pm

If you have a garbage disposal in your kitchen sink, then you know how important it is to your meal preparation and clean-up. Having a garbage disposal to break down the scraps of food that are left behind on the dinner plates or, to mash up the bits of cereal from the breakfast bowl can make clean-up a much quicker process.

So, you also know how disruptive it would be to have a failure in your garbage disposal. First of all, you wouldn’t be able to put anything solid down that sink drain. Imagine the interruption this could cause for your meal clean-up.

Here are some tips:

  • As you are rinsing dishes and cleaning up from a meal, you have probably noticed the water back up in the sink. This is a normal sign and not something to worry about. But, if when you engage the garbage disposal, the water doesn’t go away, this is a sign of trouble. If you have never dealt with a clogged garbage disposal before, now would be a good time to call a plumber.
  • The sound of an object in your garbage disposal cannot be mistaken. Use a flashlight to peek inside and pull out the item that is cause the trouble. If there is no object inside, then you have a much bigger problem. Metal on metal noise coming from your garbage disposal should always be investigated by a professional. This is a sign that the mechanics of your disposal are damaged or lose and need repair. If there isn’t a spoon or a hard bone scrape in the disposal causing the noise, then make sure to contact a plumber.
  • After you run your disposal, put a couple of drops of dish soap and let that run with hot water as well. This helps to wash the inside of the disposal and, reduce the smell. After you have done this step, spread the gasket at the opening of the disposal drain and look inside. Make sure that all of the food is being broken down and moved out of the disposal. If there is still large chunks of food in there, then you probably have a problem with the blades that needs to be addressed.

There are many things that can go wrong with a garbage disposal, each of which gives its own sign that it is coming. Here are a couple of signs of garbage disposal trouble that you should be aware of. Knowing the signs is the first step to being able to catch the problem quickly before it escalates into something major
