Shower Habits Your Pipes Wish You Would Retire

Having spent more than 45 years in the plumbing business, we’ve gotten to know pipes pretty well. That being said, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to speak on their behalf. With most four-person homes in America using their shower at least twice a day, pipes are one of the hardest working fixtures in your home. While there’s no denying they’re sturdy little guys, they’re not indestructible.

On behalf of your pipes, below are a few shower habits they wish you would give up ASAP!

1. Not having a cover over your drain.

From small toys to hair and soap scum, there’s a lot that goes down your shower sink without you realizing. But luckily, there’s an incredibly inexpensive and simple solution — a drain cover. These small covers, often made from metal or silicone, fit perfectly over your drain and catch debris. Just remember to clean it after each shower, or you may notice your water starting to pool.

2. Not brushing your hair before getting in the shower.

Speaking of hairballs, there’s even more you can do to prevent them from making a home in your plumbing, like brushing your hair before getting in the shower.

3. Using chemical drain cleaners.

We get it — chemical cleaners are inexpensive, can be found almost anywhere, and promise to get the job done quickly. But there’s a secret those little bottles are hiding — they’re terrible for your plumbing! Chemical cleaners are aggressive, too aggressive. While they’re busy breaking down a clog, they’re also breaking down your pipes protective coating. If you regularly use chemical cleaners, you’re likely on your way to having rusted or cracked pipes. Plus, these chemicals are terrible for the environment.

4. Taking long, hot showers.

A relaxing shower is fine once in a while, but if you’re taking hour-long, hot showers every morning, you could be doing irreversible damage to your bathroom and pipes. The longer you shower, the more steam builds in your bathroom. Over time, that steam can cause mold and mildew to grow in the caulking of your tiles and behind your bathroom walls.

If you notice water pooling at your feet while you shower, it’s probably time to call Mr. Rooter of Central PA! Here at Mr. Rooter, we only use eco-friendly, gentle practices, like hydro-scrub jetting, to clear your most stubborn clogs.
