4 Signs Your Water Heater Needs Repair

4 Signs Your Water Heater Needs Repair

Your water heater is one of the most important appliances in your home. You’ll want to keep it running smoothly for as long as you can. Just like most appliances, though, the water heater can fail due to age or other factors. Recognizing how water heater failure manifests is crucial, in order to fix the problem in a timely manner. Listed below are some of the signs you should notice that indicate a water heater needs immediate repairs.

Shifting Water Temperature

A water heater uses two elements that warm up the water in the upper and lower parts of the tank. This way, the water heater keeps gallons of water hot for any showers you’d like to take. If you notice that the hot water runs out quickly or fluctuates between lukewarm and hot, there is probably an error with your heating elements – they may need repair or replacement. In addition, there is also the possibility of mineral deposits building on the heating elements, hindering their functions.

Water Heater Leakage

The presence of leaks near the water heater is one of the most obvious signs of a need for repair. Leaks are not always that obvious, however. Make sure to inspect the water heater and look for any presence of water. If you see water, look closely at the pipes to see a possible leak or source of the water. In case you are incapable of seeing the leak, clean up the water you found and periodically check on the area. If water continues to emerge from the spot, call a professional immediately to repair the leak before it escalates into a major problem.

Tainted Water

If the water tastes metallic or has a rust color to it, your water heater is having corrosion problems. Check both hot and cold water. If only the hot water is rusty, then the problem is specifically with the water heater, while the rust presence on both means the pipes have corrosion.

Unusual Noises

Water heaters, like most machines, usually make some noise. If the noise is unusual to you, such as some loud banging, popping, or cracking, it’s likely the sign of mineral deposits building up inside the tank and damaging it.
