A toilet leaking at the base is one of the most common plumbing calls we receive from Indian Trail homeowners. The most common cause is a failed wax ring. The wax ring sits between the bottom of the toilet and the closet flange (the pipe fitting mounted to the floor). Other causes of a toilet leaking at the base include:

• A cracked or corroded closet flange. If the flange is broken, the toilet cannot seat properly, and the wax ring cannot maintain a seal. The flange needs repair or replacement before a new wax ring will hold.
• Loose closet bolts. The two bolts (also called tee bolts) that hold the toilet to the flange loosen over time. When the toilet rocks even slightly, it breaks the wax seal. Tightening the bolts sometimes resolves the issue, but if the wax ring has already been compromised, it needs to be replaced.
• Condensation on the tank and bowl. In humid North Carolina summers, cold water entering the tank causes moisture to condense on the outside of the porcelain. This water drips down to the base, making it look like a leak from the seal. Before pulling the toilet, a plumber should rule out condensation as the source.
• A crack in the base of the toilet itself. Hairline cracks in porcelain are difficult to see but allow water to seep through with every flush. If the toilet base is cracked, the toilet needs to be replaced.
