Your Kitchen Plumbing and Appliances Count Too!

Hosting dinner parties in our homes with friends and family is the perfect time to re-connect with loved ones. Along with this eating and reuniting comes more work for the kitchen and all of the appliances housed there. The kitchen plumbing is also no slouch during these heavy times of meal preparation and clean-up. One area of the plumbing that gets worked extra hard is the dishwasher. However, by following some simple tips you can make sure that your dishwasher stays in top working order throughout your entertaining season!

  1. While no one wants to wash their dishes before they … wash their dishes. It is important to make sure to clean all of the food off of your dishes before they are put in the dishwasher. During the holiday season foods like casseroles and baked goods can leave a lot of extra residue on your dishes, which should be thoroughly cleaned off to avoid any clogging of your dishwasher’s drain
  2. Always run the water in your kitchen sink until it is hot, before beginning the wash cycle of your dishwasher. This ensures that there is hot water at the start of the wash cycle, rather than cold water until hot water makes it from the hot water heater. This is especially important to do during the cold weather months as your hot water heater must work harder during the winter.
  3. Make it a habit to clean the drain trap of your dishwasher after each cycle. The drain trap catches hair and food particles that are too large to rinse down the dishwasher drain and should be cleared to make sure a clog does not happen. The drain trap can usually be found under the lower sprayer, check your dishwasher’s operation manual to locate the trap on your particular model.
