Typical Septic System Troubles
Detached Dividing Wall: Septic tanks can encounter issues and even fail when the two inner compartments separate — often related to infrequent septic tank pumping. Full/Overflowing Tank: Overflowing septic tanks can wreak havoc on your drain field because not all sewage is being absorbed by your drain field, causing it to pool on the surface. Plant Roots: Large plants or trees near your septic system can create serious issues if their roots extend toward the tank and cause damage. Tank Corrosion: The corrosion of septic tank walls is a frequent cause of tank replacement and usually occurs when hydrogen sulfide gas becomes trapped in the compartments.

I’ll start with this: Yes, I would totally recommend Mr Rooter. Broken sewer pipes are never good news, and unexpected & sudden discovery is not likable. It started with an overflowing mess in our basement and ended up with a large, new section of pipe, deep in our front yard. To the rescue was Mr Rooter. After an emergency clearing of our drain pipes (fast response!), they found a “blockage” using camera probe). Turned out the pipe was broken, buried 7 feet deep. They dug down, found another break and another. Four in total. Huge tree roots had crushed the pipe. This was not an easy nor inexpensive venture. On the upside, Vinnie – our Mr Rooter project manager – was awesome. This kind of problem causes quite a disruption in our life, with the water/drainage unusable as the fix was happening, but the communication and clear explanation from a very experienced and understanding Vinnie, things went as well as could be hoped for. He and his crew were efficient, hard-working, friendly, and respectful of our needs and property – and wallet. Vinnie was refreshingly honest and candid about our options as the ordeal unfolded. Everything was handled professionally and the site was secured and blocked off, with all permits in place (and no complaints from the neighbors), and a tidy jobsite. While costs for this kind of work is not inexpensive, I think we got a fair value. Big thanks to Vinnie – and crew! We’ll use them for maintenance in the future.

When you require more information about septic system repairs, you may find the answers in our’Frequently Asked Questions’ below. For all queries, concerns, and questions, contact the Mr. Rooter Plumbing® team in Northgate, Washington

How much you pay to replace a septic system can depend on where you live, your property type, and the septic system repair team you book for your service. In many situations, the pump you choose for your septic tank can contribute to the costs of septic tank replacement, like a centrifugal or turbine pump, which can differ in price. Some septic tanks are more expensive to replace than others, with conventional septic systems typically being among the most cost-effective compared to chamber septic systems, drip distribution septic systems, and alternative systems like aerobic, waterless, and mound. The costs of replacing a septic system can be higher with a larger septic tank compared to a smaller one.
-
Septic tank repair companies consider a wide range of factors when putting together job estimates for quality septic tank repairs, but the general range is $650 to $6,500. The issues you’re experiencing with your septic tank can ultimately contribute to the price tag for repairs, with septic tank cracks and collapsed drain fields typically costing thousands of dollars to remedy, while a simple septic tank blockage or a baffle failure might cost mere hundreds. The repair price tag associated with small septic tanks may be much smaller than large ones because they may require less time and fewer materials. Time is a significant factor in septic tank repairs, so if your tank is hard to access, you may find this reflected in the repair costs.
-
In most cases, septic tanks have a lifespan reflective of the maintenance they have received over their lifetime, with well-cared-for septic tanks often lasting longer than poorly maintained ones. Many property owners will be pleased to know that if their septic tank is professionally installed and they maintain it well over the years, it will likely provide them with 15 to 40 years of faithful service. The construction materials of your septic tank may play a part in its expected lifespan, with concrete tanks known to last 40 years or beyond compared to 15 or 20 years for steel tanks that can eventually succumb to rust. A number of factors contribute to a septic tank’s lifespan, like how frequently you pump it, the soil and site conditions, usage, and your septic system’s design and installation.
-
There can be a number of surface clues that can help you find your septic tank on your property, like depressions in the ground, different grass and vegetation growth, and general signs of ground disturbance. If you’re a new homeowner, you may be able to locate your septic tank by checking your inspection records and any information left by the former owner. You may easily find out where your septic tank is located by accessing your property’s building plans. If you haven’t had any luck locating your septic tank after trying multiple methods, contact a septic tank service company since they have experience, tools, and tech to help locate your septic tank.
-
Request immediate attention for your collapsed septic tank since it can pose healthy safety risks to your property’s occupants with its raw sewage. When you’re made aware of your septic tank collapsing, stop using it right away, as it’s no longer able to take care of your household’s waste in the way it should. There’s a good chance your collapsed septic tank will create further property damage if you don’t stop using them, such as sinkholes and detached pipes that cause wastewater to back up. Legal issues may be associated with using a septic tank once it has collapsed due to the health hazards it can present, so it’s advisable not to use them.
-
Simply prioritizing regular septic tank pumping through trusted service providers can be a great way to keep your septic tank operating at its best for many years. Not all products you buy for drains and toilets are septic system-safe, so be mindful of what you flush to protect your septic system from damage. Don’t neglect drain field maintenance, which includes not planting trees near it, installing drainage systems and sump pumps away from it, and avoiding parking near it to minimize the risk of damage. Homeowners and businesses can take care of their septic tanks by not washing harsh chemicals down their drains, using water efficiently, and using septic-safe toilet paper that breaks down quickly.
-
While you might have a small amount of knowledge regarding septic tank repairs, they can get messy and complicated, so leave repairs to licensed and insured service professionals. If you need to repair or replace baffles in your septic tank, this process typically involves inspecting the components and ordering and replacing parts that are damaged. Septic tank repairs typically involve uncovering maintenance holes and access ports and even some ground excavation. To learn whether you’ve successfully repaired your septic tank, check for any signs of poor performance or leaks before and after you repair your tank.
-
Septic tank repairs can sometimes be covered by homeowners’ insurance when the damage results from events outside your control, like fires, lightning, windstorms, and hail. Damage to a septic tank caused by an explosion doesn’t have to be the burden of the homeowner; your insurance provider may cover the costs of repairs or total replacement. If your septic tank is damaged by an act of vandalism or a natural disaster, discuss your coverage with your insurance provider, as your policy may cover the costs of repairing or replacing it. When your septic tank has succumbed to general wear and tear or has been damaged due to a lack of maintenance, your insurance provider likely won’t pay for repairs.
-
Properties with septic tanks can frequently experience blockages in pipes and clogs in drain fields that call for the experience and expertise of septic tank service providers. Age, pressure, and ground movement can lead to cracks and leaks in septic tanks, which can mean you need to contact experts for repairs and sometimes even replacement. It’s not uncommon for septic tank users to notice overflow and backups, often resulting from high usage, infrequent maintenance, and full tanks in need of pumping. Many homeowners encounter septic tank challenges related to poorly installed drain fields, tree root damage from trees planted too close to their septic systems, and old age.
-
If the cracks in your septic tank are minor, there’s a chance a reputable septic tank service provider in your area can perform repairs using quality concrete and epoxy sealants. Depending on the type and size of the crack in your septic tank, a trusted septic tank service provider may be able to repair light cracks with patching compounds from a tank patch kit. If you’ve noticed a sizeable structural crack in your septic tank, contact your local trusted service professional as soon as possible, and they may be able to repair the crack by reinforcing the area with more materials. Septic tank replacement is often a more economical and efficient option if your septic tank is old and has cracks that are too large and complex to repair.
