Different Plumbing Noises and What They Could Mean

Do you hear unprecedented banging, creaking or screeching sounds throughout your home? A common cause of unwanted noises throughout your home is the plumbing. Properly installed and maintained plumbing shouldn’t make a sound, but if you’re hearing noises, it's an indicator that something isn’t right. Common plumbing noises to be aware of include:

  • Bangs, clunks, clangs: If you hear a single bang sound when appliances like the dishwasher or washer stop filling or when you turn off a faucet, the problem is likely what is known as "water hammer." High water pressure is a common cause. When you turn off a faucet and the water stops flowing, the change in pressure must be absorbed by something, commonly your pipes, which results in a noise. Over time, the stress of this can cause a leak.
  • Running water sound: The cause of running water is most likely a broken flush valve. This piece allows water to flow back into the toilet tank to prepare for subsequent flushes. Open the toilet tank and look to see if water is running over the overflow hole. If so, then bend the arm back down so the valve properly triggers the shutoff. Fixing this issue is simple: just replace the flush valve ball or rubber flapper in your tank.
  • Ticking: There are three common causes of ticking pipes. The first is a water meter in need of replacement plus noise from the device traveling through the pipes. The ticking could also be your pipes expanding or contracting due to temperature changes or loose or unstable pipes. Having a professional plumber come to your home to investigate the problem can prevent any larger issues from popping up.
  • Screeching: If your home has a radiator or baseboard heater, the screeching could be air in the water lines. Another possible reason for screeching is that the pressure-reducing valve could be old and may need adjusting or replacement.
